Lot's of new stuff about overweight/obesity and insulin resistance

Just a brief blog this am.  I am attending the American Diabetes Association scientific meetings in San Francisco this weekend.  Experts from across the country are updating the attendees on a variety of topics related to insulin resistance, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.

Yesterday, we heard about the association of sleep apnea, a serious sleep disorder, and insulin resistance.  We also heard about medications that are associated with the development of insulin resistance and diabetes, such as Protease Inhibitors being used to treat HIV infection and the new antipsychotics used for certain mental illnesses.  Dr. Ludwig, a pediatrician from Boston, reviewed studies related to the use of glycemic index and glycemic load for weight control.  The final talk was on the relationship of the location of fat in the body to the development of bad things, like metabolic disturbances.  Fascinating and important stuff.

I will write in more detail about some of these topics shortly.  Meanwhile, it's off to SF for another day of meetings.
